A native of British Columbia, Wendy McDonald began her business career when her husband's untimely death in 1950 thrust her into the day-to-day management of a fledgling machine shop. This was a mandate that she assumed with gusto. Swimming against a current of chauvinism that dominated industry, she expanded the business while also raising 10 children. Under her leadership, B.C. Bearing Engineers Ltd. became Canada's largest distributor of bearing and power transmission products. A key supplier to the mining industry, her company operates on three continents and employs more than 500 people
Wendy Burdon McDonald has received honorary doctorates from Simon Fraser University and BIT. She was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 1997. She was recognized as Canadian Businesswoman of the Year in 1982, and as Leading Woman Entrepreneur of the World in 1998. In 2000 she was inducted into the Sales and Marketing Executives International" Academy of Achievement" Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. In 2006 she has received the RBC Canadian Woman Entrepreneur Award, the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Influential Women in Business Awards, the Lifetime Achievement PEAK Award at Women in Finance and most recently The Order of British Columbia.
