Self-taught mechanic Joseph-Armand Bombardier is best-known for developing the snowmobile. More than a recreational vehicle, his invention helped end the isolation of winter that plagued areas of the world's northern regions, including Bombardier's native Quebec. The prototype, in 1935, was a modified car equipped with his greatest invention the "wheel/track system". The snowmobile gave birth to a variety of emergency rescue vehicles and eventually led to the famous Ski-Doo brand.
Bombardier died in February 1964, but by 1994, Bombardier Inc. had recorded two million snowmobile sales and emerged as one of the world's leading manufacturers for the transportation industry. Today, the company is renowned for its aircraft and rail transportation systems, employing some 59,000 people worldwide.
