Peter Lymburner Robertson*
Robertson Inc.
Milton, Ontario

P. L. Robertson was an innovator, an industrialist and an astute businessman. He was known throughout Canada as the inventor of the Robertson screw. At the turn of the century Robertson, then a traveling salesman, applied for and patented numerous items but it was his 1906 patent that would make him famous - a screw with a square pyramid socket punched in the centre of its head. He began production of the screw in 1908, using machinery mostly of his own design. His products became widely used, from the wooden bodyworks of Henry Ford's model T to ships built by the British Navy in WWII. Robertson would also become one of the first firms in the fastener business to pre-package screws and nails. His 40-year career transformed the Haldimand Country farm boy into a millionaire-philanthropist. Robertson remained in control of his company until his death in 1951.

Robertson's socket head screw revolutionized the industry. With the accuracy of one one-thousandth of an inch, the square headed screwdriver has a tighter fit than a slot screwdriver and rarely slipped.

Fully 85% of the screws sold in Canada use the Robertson head. About 10% of the screws sold in the U.S. are Robertson.
