Dr. John S. MacDonald
MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates
Burnaby, British Columbia

Dr. MacDonald's passion, dreams and commitment have contributed to the shaping of the Canadian Space Program for 30 years. In 1969, Dr. MacDonald co-founded the firm MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates, now MDA, which he headed until 1998. As advisor to government and as a member of the Science Council of Canada and the National Research Council of Canada, among others, Dr. MacDonald has helped position Canada as a world leader in many fields of space science and technology.

Canada's most famous robot and technological achievement - made its space debut on November 13, 1981. It was designed, developed and built by Spar Space Robotics operation, now MacDonald Dettwiler Space and Advanced Robotics Ltd. (MDR), under contract to the National Research Council of Canada. The first Canadarm cost roughly $100 million to design, develop, build testing models and manufacture. It was given to NASA as Canada's contribution to the Space Shuttle Program.

Subsequently, NASA ordered four additional units which have resulted in over $600 million in export sales for Canada. Our country has become renowned for its expertise in robotics as the Canadarm firmly established Canadian credibility as scientists and engineers. More recently, MDA conceived, developed and launched Radarsat-2, one of the most advanced radar imaging spacecraft in existence.

Currently Dr. John S. MacDonald O.C., is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for Day4Energy, a manufacturer of Photovoltaic modules using a new technology that yields superior performance through reduced losses within the module and enables the introduction of greatly improved photovoltaic cell designs that will lead to substantial improvement in the performance of solar modules with no increase in cost.

Dr. MacDonald is a registered Professional Engineer, a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (I.E.E.E.), a Founding Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute.
